Pill Power: What Gulf Users Should Know About the New Oral Weight-Loss Medications

The US FDA has approved the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide, 25 mg daily) for weight management, with pharmacy launch starting January 2026 (reported by Nasdaq, Novo Nordisk).

A second oral GLP-1, Foundayo (orforglipron), got FDA approval in April 2026 as a once-daily, non-peptide alternative (FDA; middlewaynutrition.com).

These are the first daily GLP-1 weight-loss options in pill form, removing the need for injections previously required for this class of obesity drugs.

The arrival of oral GLP-1 medicines marks a shift for patients unwilling or unable to use injectables. In clinical trials (OASIS-4, ATTAIN-1), oral semaglutide led to an average weight loss of up to 16.6 percent with full adherence, or roughly 13.6 percent for all participants, compared to 2.2 percent on placebo (Nasdaq). Foundayo achieved 7.8 to 12.4 percent average loss depending on dose, compared to 2.1 percent with placebo (Cornell Chronicle; Lilly).

Both drugs are effective, with side effects primarily limited to gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, diarrhea, constipation), but rare and more serious events like pancreatitis are still being studied (WHO).

Importantly, the pills are not created equal in convenience. The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach with minimal water, and patients must then wait 30 minutes before eating. Foundayo, by contrast, has no food timing restrictions (middlewaynutrition.com).

While these medicines are now included in the World Health Organization's Essential Medicines List for conditional use, issues around long-term safety, total cost, and equitable access remain significant. The medicine alone is unlikely to suffice without broader system capacity and patient support, warned WHO in December 2025.
